Partington Railway Years

Date opened: 29.5.1893
Location: East side of Manchester Road (A6144)

Partington Station was the second station so named and was located on the Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) Glazebrook to Stockport Tiviot Dale Line. In the 1890's the building of the Manchester Ship Canal necessitated the diversion and raising up of a number of railway lines including the Glazebrook to Stockport Tiviot Dale line. The line had to be built up to a height that would allow sea going vessels to pass underneath and so a deviation was constructed just to the south of the original line which included a large single span girder bridge and a new station for Partington. For a few weeks in 1893 both lines were in use but eventually the original course of the line was split into two by the excavation of the Manchester Ship Canal. The original Partington station closed to passengers on the 29.5.1893 and Partington (2nd) opened on the same day.

Situated on an embankment the station had two platforms that where linked by a subway. At platform level there where fairly simple waiting facilities. The station was served by trains running between Stockport Tiviot Dale and Liverpool Central with some workings operating only as far as Warrington Central. Many express services passed through the station along with a steady stream of goods services.

The line remained as part of the CLC right up until nationalisation in 1948. The line remained busy right up until the 1960's when stopping passenger services where withdrawn from 30.11.1964, freight facilities had been withdrawn from 10.4.1964.

Some through workings and diversions continued to operate after this date but with the withdrawal of long distance services from Liverpool Central in 1966 these came to an end. The line remained in use for goods services right the way into the 1980's. In 1984 the bridge over the Ship Canal was closed and the line singled between Skelton Junction and a point just to the south east of Partington Station where it enters a Chemical plant. Chemical trains continued to run over this section until 10.10.1993.

Today the Liverpool direction platform is still extant and sections of the Stockport platform can still be seen. Of particular interest is the glazed brick subway which although partially buried can still be viewed.
